Client Agency: Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA)
Phase II of the Honam High-Speed Railway extends from Gwangju Songjeong Station to Mokpo Station, with a total length of 77.6 kilometers and five stations (including the start and end stations). Upon completion, the full length of the Honam High-Speed Railway will reach 260.7 kilometers, significantly enhancing the railway transportation system in southwestern Korea.
This phase is divided into two parts:
Gwangju Songjeong to Gomagwon Section – Spanning 26.4 kilometers, this segment utilizes the existing Honam Line with facility upgrades to raise the operating speed to 230 km/h. Construction began in June 2019.
Gomagwon to Imseong-ri Section – This newly constructed 44.1-kilometer line passes by Muan International Airport and merges back into the Honam Line at Imseong-ri, ultimately connecting to Mokpo Station. Construction of this section began in August 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
Upon the completion of Phase II, travel time between Gwangju and Mokpo will be significantly reduced, and the overall transportation network in the southwest region will be improved. This route links major cities with Muan International Airport, improving passenger transport efficiency and convenience. The project is expected to stimulate regional tourism, industrial development, and urban-rural balance, playing a critical role in strengthening Korea’s national railway backbone.
Moreover, the new section is designed for high-speed operations, which will enhance train punctuality and overall operational performance. This is anticipated to encourage greater use of public transportation, support national policies on energy saving and carbon reduction, and contribute to the realization of sustainable mobility.
